McLaren plays down IndyCar return, F1 number one priority

McLaren plays down IndyCar return, F1 number one priority McLaren executive director Zak Brown has ruled out an immediate return to Indycar this year insisting Formula 1 remains the team’s ‘number one priority’. Fernando Alonso’s run in the Indy500 in 2017 has fuelled rumours McLaren will be open to competing at the Brickyard again at some point in the future, to continue to expand its brand in America. However, with the Woking-based outfit’s new engine partnership with Renault still in its very early stages, Brown has put to bed any attempt at entering the 2018 event to focus on McLaren’s efforts in F1 this season. Following the introduction of the next generation Indycar, Brown was asked by RACER if there had been any temptation to make a full-time move to the American series. “No. I think the cars look great,” said Brown. “I think the cars look really good, but [it’s] too soon. “With all that we’ve got going on in Formula 1, while the mechanics and engineers and all that are 100% focused, the minute me or Jonathan Neale or John Allert or Eric [Boullier] are not spending 100% of our time on Formula 1 that starts becoming a distraction for us. “I’ve got to find more partners for our Formula 1 team, so any moment I’m trying to find an IndyCar team is a moment I’m not spending on trying to fund the Formula 1 team, which is priority number one. “So I think before we leap into any of these other racing series, we’ve got to get back on the podium in F1. As a fan of McLaren and as a racer I want to do them all this year, but as a business we’ve got to lay out a 10-year strategy and why we’re doing it, how we’re doing it, how it’s sustainable. “With all that’s going on, not only with our Formula 1 team but Formula 1 as a whole, we need to be spending all our time on making sure whatever happens in 2021 we’re in a good place. So I don’t think any of those other series are around the corner.

McLaren Sports Series owners now have even more choice when it comes to personalising their cars as McLaren Special Operations (MSO) adds further options. New exterior body addenda, a titanium exhaust and even black or orange painted ignition keys feature on the new MSO enhancement list.

The MSO Titanium SuperSports exhaust, now available for the 570S (Coupe and Spider) and 570GT is five kilograms lighter than the standard system and McLaren says it has a ‘cleaner, crisper exhaust tone’ with a ‘pronounced crescendo above 5000rpm’. It’s five decibels louder than the regular item and costs £4750 when ordered on a new car and will be available as a retrofit item in the summer.

McLaren refusing to rule out Hamilton reunion

McLaren refusing to rule out Hamilton reunion Zak Brown has hinted he would be willing to reunite Lewis Hamilton with his former team McLaren should the Briton decide to not sign a new contract with Mercedes. Hamilton enters the final year of his current contract with the Silver Arrows this year, but is expected to re-sign for the reigning world champions to continue his long-term relationship with Mercedes-Benz. The four-time world champion signed with McLaren at the age of 13, eventually earning a seat in Formula 1 for the Woking outfit in 2007 – where he raced for five years. Executive director Brown says he would be open to reacquainting Hamilton at McLaren in 2019 should the 32-year-old opt for a fresh challenge in his career. “I don’t think there’s a team in the pitlane that wouldn’t be interested in having Lewis drive for them, us included,” Brown told reporters, quoted by Reuters. “If anyone got Lewis, it would be great for the team. He has a great history here and he is very friendly with the shareholders.” Hamilton’s future in the sport has been debated, with the record pole-sitter citing a desire to go into a new career once he retires from racing, something Brown believes will be key to when he decides to hang up his helmet. ”I am going to guess that he’s contemplating how much longer he wants to go. If you’re Lewis, with what you’ve done with Mercedes and where Mercedes are headed, you’d re-sign with the team,” he added. ”He’s talked about when he stops, so that would be my guess. I can’t imagine it’s money or the quality of the team. ”He just might be going ‘let me see how this year goes, what’s the rush? They’re not going to sell the seat from underneath me’. That would be my speculation. “We might find they actually have signed and are just not telling us.
