Present stadiums . Europe. Whereas only a few months ago it appeared that Chelsea was putting all its eggs in the basket of a new stadium at the Battersea Power Station site, it now appears that the club is still actively hunting for other West-London sites. Focus of the club is a site at Earl’s Court located only a few hundred metres away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea this week revealed to the world what their impressive new 60,000-seater stadium on the site of Stamford Bridge will look like. Chelsea have presented their plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge to Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

The proposed rebuild to increase capacity to 60,000 was presented in model form at a hearing at Hammersmith Town Hall on Wednesday.

The Mayor of London will then have a defined period by which to endorse or not the council's permission.

Jose Fonte hands in transfer request at Southampton

Jose Fonte hands in transfer request at Southampton Southampton captain Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request. Press Association Sport understands the central defender has asked to leave having chosen not to sign the new contract he had been offered.Despite suggestions Southampton were prepared only to give Fonte an increased salary and not a lengthier term, the club are adamant he has rejected a 12-month extension to the present one he signed in October 2015 and which expires in 18 months. The development is only the latest surrounding the 33-year-old's future.

The issue of associating a corporate brand with a new home for Chelsea goes back to long before the present plans to build a new 60,000 capacity stadium on the existing site. Senior club sources were clear this was part of the deal for any new stadium , wherever it was to be located, as far back as the 2011 attempt to wrestle the freehold from Chelsea Pitch Owners. Now sources close to the present plans have confirmed naming rights are very much on the agenda for the planned grand opening of the new stadium in 2020.

Stamford Bridge's current capacity is 41,663, making it the ninth largest club ground in England behind Manchester United, Arsenal, West Ham, Manchester City, Liverpool, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Rather than move site and build from scratch, though, the club have decided that redeveloping Stamford Bridge is their preferred option.

The main point of discussion is likely to be the ground's proximity to transport, with the new prospective capacity of 60,000 making the distance of underground and railway lines paramount and the main challenge facing the project.

The project will also mean that the club will need to find a temporary home due to the complex nature of the build, with a lowering of the arena and excavation likely to achieve the desired capacity on the 12-acre site.
