Furyk named Ryder Cup captain

Furyk named Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has been named as the USA captain for the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National. The 46-year-old succeeds Davis Love III, who guided the USA to a 17-11 victory at Hazeltine last autumn.Furyk featured in nine consecutive Ryder Cups as a player between 1997 and 2014, before acting as one of Love's five vice-captains in Minnesota. The US Ryder Cup committee, which included Love as well as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, have left Furyk the challenge of trying to claim a first American win on away soil since they last defended the trophy in 1993.

Furyk was an assistant captain for Davis Love III at Hazeltine, helping the Americans capture their first Ryder Cup since 2008. “Anything is possible, but given the plan of continuity from year to year, not having been an assistant captain this past year would be an inconsistency," a source told Rosaforte. "But having three President Cup captaincies and multiple [Ryder Cup] vice captaincies and his close relationship to Davis, he’d be a great alternative if Furyk or Tiger don’t make the team as players.”

Love captained the Americans twice, in 2012 and 2016, and played in six Ryder Cups. Last fall, the United States reclaimed the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008 by defeating Europe 17-11 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. Unveiling Furyk as captain , PGA of America President Paul Levy said: “For more than two decades, Jim Furyk has stood proud and tall on the American golf stage and we are thrilled to have him as our Ryder Cup Captain .

Jim Furyk admits he is fully focused on being the USA Ryder Cup captain in 2018, but hasn’t ruled out the possibility of also playing at Le Golf National.

The 46-year-old was named as the USA's 28th Ryder Cup captain in history and will succeed Davis Love III, who guided America to a 17-11 victory at Hazeltine last autumn.

Furyk played in nine consecutive Ryder Cups between 1997 and 2014 and was a contender for a captain's pick last year, before eventually being involved in the tournament as one of Love's assistants.

Furyk 's nine Ryder Cup appearances is second in U.S. history, trailing only Phil Mickelson's 11 straight (still active). Lanny Wadkins, Billy Casper and Raymond Floyd -- all former Ryder Cup USA Captains -- are tied for third with eight appearances each. Bjørn congratulates Furyk on US Ryder Cup captaincy . 2h ago. And all of that leads to the lack of suspense over Ryder Cup captaincies . If Furyk were to play well enough to make the team, Couples could stand in as captain -- which is why it wouldn't be a surprise to see Couples as an assistant this fall at Liberty National. Don't focus too much on Furyk 's Ryder Cup record of 10-20-4 -- tied with Mickelson for the most defeats in U.S. history.

The world No 37 intends to play regularly on the PGA Tour and could become the first skipper since Arnold Palmer in 1963 to act as player-captain, but Furyk admits it's far too soon for that to be discussed.

"As far as making the team, my major concern is being the captain," Furyk told Sky Sports News HQ. "If I were able being very successful next year and I was in that mix, then that's something we can talk about then.

"I plan on keeping a fairly similar schedule to what I've had done for the past couple of years, and I plan on still playing 18-20 tournaments worldwide.

"It's really putting the cart before the horse right now and I've been asked that question a lot, but my main focus right now is to be the captain in 2018."

The USA will head to France looking for their first win away from home since they last successfully defended the Ryder Cup in 1993.

Bjorn welcomes Furyk choice

Bjorn welcomes Furyk choice Thomas Bjorn is looking forward to taking on Jim Furyk after he was confirmed as the US Ryder Cup captain for 2018. Bjorn was unveiled as Darren Clarke's successor as European captain last month, and the PGA of America have entrusted Furyk with the responsibility of masterminding a first American win in Europe since 1993.Furyk becomes Team USA's most-capped captain having featured in nine contests as a player, although his record of 20 defeats from 34 matches leaves him tied with Phil Mickelson for the most losses in the competition.

The PGA of America announced Wednesday that Jim Furyk will captain the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup team at Le Golf National in Paris. Furyk , 46, played on nine straight Ryder Cup teams from 1997-2014. He compiled a 10-20-4 individual record across that span before serving last year as an assistant captain for Davis Love III as the Americans won the biennial matches for the first time since 2008. "His experience, two captaincies and a vice captaincy , will be priceless for me, so I'm happy to have him by my side."

In various ways, Jim Furyk --named today as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain for 2018, when the matches will be played in France for the first time--seems like a totally conventional choice by the PGA of America, working in concert with a committee of leading American players. He’s a stable, reliable person, not at all a hot head, and those are useful qualities in a captain . Also, like Love, he follows other professional sports closely, knows many coaches and managers, and can take lessons from those people and apply them to his Ryder Cup captaincy .

Europe will be skippered by Thomas Bjorn in 2018 and Furyk is relishing the opportunity to go head-to-head with the Dane.

"It's a big challenge to go and try to win on away soil," Furyk added. "I look at Thomas as a friend, who will be a great leader and will have a wonderful, talented team.

"We've not played in matches together in a Ryder Cup, but we've played in teams against each other. He has a lot of experience as a vice-captain and him and I have always been friends.

"I'm going to have a lot of great help and a lot of great resources here, not only from the PGA of America but from my vice-captains.

"I know they [Europe] will want to change the outcome from 2016, the fans there are fantastic and with the French Open there they'll have a significant home course advantage."
