Sakho open to Saints switch this month

Sakho open to Saints switch this month Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is reportedly open to a move to Southampton this month. According to an emerging report from French news outlet GFFN, Sakho is keen on remaining in the Premier League for the foreseeable future and sees Saints as a good destination if he is to leave this month. The France international centre-back is yet to play a single minute of competitive football at senior level this season, making five Under-23 appearances for The Reds. Southampton could be looking around for a new central defender this January after Jose Fonte handed in a transfer request at the club. Sakho hasn’t quite had the rub of the green in recent times but is still a defender with a lot to offer and if Liverpool are willing to let him go this month, Claude Puel is keen to link up with his compatriot. West Brom and Stoke are also claimed to be interested.

It has been 12 months since Liverpool last went back to back games without scoring.

Losing to Southampton at St. Mary’s in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final 1-0 saw Liverpool repeat the ignoble feat.

There were precious little positives about Liverpool’s performance in what has to be the nadir of the season.

Nearly nothing went well apart from Loris Karius and some good fortune preventing the Reds from suffering a crushing defeat before returning to Anfield in a fortnight. While a a second leg at home will be a very different proposition, Liverpool certainly made things more difficult.

Southampton team news: Liverpool (Cup)

Southampton team news: Liverpool (Cup) Southampton manager Claude Puel has handed out the latest squad news ahead of his side’s EFL Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool at St.Mary’s tomorrow. Puel started with some good news. Cuco Martina and Cedric Soares both return to the squad. Martina missed the 2-2 draw with Norwich at the weekend with illness, whilst Cedric was absent after sustaining a head injury against Everton last week. Speaking to Southampton’s website, Puel said this: “Cuco Martina was ill for the last game but he is now available against and Cédric is also after he recovered from his problem against Everton.” Puel has also revealed that Charlie Austin and Alex McCarthy are still missing with injury. However, young midfielder Jake Hesketh has recovered from his knock and could be in contention to face Liverpool. “Charlie Austin is still injured, Alex McCarthy is still injured but Jake Hesketh has now come back into training and this is good for him.” Sofiane Boufal is another absentee. He was set to play in the African Cup of Nations for Morocco but has now returned to Southampton with a knee injury. The winger is expected to be out for around three weeks before returning to action for Puel’s side. “[Sofiane] Boufal will be out injured with his knee. He won’t be participating in the African Cup of Nations, and will be with us for his recovery. I hope we can see him back in three weeks.

In a first half largely dominated by the home side, Nathan Redmond nabbed a richly deserved opening goal (below video) to give Southampton a 1 - 0 lead at the quarter mark of Saints’ EFL Cup semifinal tie with Liverpool . [ LIVE: Follow EFL Cup scores ]. Loris Karius, Liverpool ’s oft-criticized, young goalkeeper, was outstanding in the opening 45 minutes, making four saves in total, two of which came in spectacular fashion to prevent a difference on the scoreboard more representative of the general run of play.

The first 20 minutes were encouraging, as Liverpool patiently probed Southampton in a measured fashion. They even produced a moment that should have resulted in a goal but Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster foiled the finish. The lack of urgency even suggested that the strong starting eleven might have had an eye on the weekend clash against rivals Manchester United.

After the opening spell, Liverpool began to unravel at the back and Southampton were aggressive in opening up on the counter. Mistakes were compounded by the pace with which the Saints were able to respond and punish Liverpool. Minutes after a remarkable save, Karius was unable to stop Nathan Redmond from slotting home an easy chance.

After that, Liverpool never looked threatening. The interval did little to improve things as the side looked completely out of synch and off the pace. The shape of the team was off balance and was unable to find any kind of rhythm to pull themselves out of their malaise.

Last time out - Southampton vs Liverpool

Last time out - Southampton vs Liverpool Southampton welcome Liverpool this evening to St Mary’s as they look to steal a march in their pursuit for EFL Cup glory. It’s sure to be a big occasion in front of the Southampton faithful, who will see their side take on The Reds in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final, and only a win will do. However, it’s not the first time the two sides have encountered each other this season. Back in mid-November, Saints welcomed Liverpool to the south coast and it was a highly intense affair. The game plan was clear for Saints: sit back, frustrate Liverpool and don’t allow them any opportunities. To an extent, this worked, but they almost paid the price for their negative tactics as Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino came close. Mane, upon his first game back at Saints, had a shot well-saved by Fraser Forster in the first-half and Firmino somehow poked a one-on-one wide in the second-half. The match finished 0-0 and Saints will hope for another positive result tonight.
