Rodgers hails Armstrong and expects international call-up

Rodgers hails Armstrong and expects international call-up Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong has received glowing praise from Brendan Rodgers following his impressive early season performances. The dynamic midfielder has been in stellar form since he came into the team this season, and already has eight goals and five assists this season in 28 appearances – mostly playing from a deep-lying midfield role. Speaking to the Scotsman about the 24-year-old, Rodgers said: “I always look at what you need to play at international level, to play at the highest level you want to be effective. You want a midfield player that’s got a high level of technique and has got mobility to run and be physical and he’s got all that. Like I said, everything you need to play at that level he has.” “We needed to find multiple scorers in the team because you are never going to succeed if you only have one player who is going to score the goals. Tom Rogic got 10 goals last season, I said to him he has to look for 20 with his qualities and our style of playing.” The next opportunity for the midfielder to get a call-up by Gordon Strachan to the Scotland squad will be in March when they host Slovenia, and Armstrong will be hoping to maintain his impressive form this far. One advantage for Armstrong is that he could have Celtic captain Scott Brown alongside him in the Tartan Army’s midfield, a familiarity which could help ease him into the role at international level. Rodgers side have won after a 2-1 at Ibrox on Saturday, and currently have a 19 point lead with a game in hand over second place. Celtic are currently on an international break, and will be in action again on January 22nd against Albion Rovers.

Colombia national team coach José Pékerman has handed a surprise call - up to River Plate midfielder Carlos Carbonero after Aldo Leão Ramírez pulled out of the tournament because of injury.
