Claudia Fragapane's European Championships campaign was momentarily plunged into darkness due to a lighting malfunction in the Cluj Arena on Thursday.

Fragapane was midway through a tough beam routine when the lights flickered, distracting her from a display she hopes will earn her a place in Sunday's final.

The 19-year-old, returning to major competition after a stint on the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing' programme, scored 13.200 after failing in an unrelated inquiry over a judging element.

Fragapane told Press Association Sport: "I noticed the lights flicker off just before I went for my difficult move, and obviously it did affect me a little bit because I didn't know what was going on.

"But I just had to get on with it - I couldn't blame the lights. I did the beam and I stuck to the routine and I'm really happy with myself - even more proud because of what happened with the lights."

Fragapane, who also competed on the floor, must wait until later on Wednesday to discover whether her scores are good enough to secure places in the respective finals.

There are no specific tournament rules relating to incidents of this type, and no suggestion of any kind of formal protest by either Fragapane or British Gymnastics.
