Wiesberger began the day two strokes adrift of overnight leader Bubba Watson but cut the deficit in half with a birdie at the 17th as he completed his first round following the suspension of play on Friday.

That set the tone for a truly remarkable day, as Wiesberger shot seven birdies for a bogey-free 65, moving him to 12 under for the tournament.

Dylan Frittelli and Thorbjorn Olsen are his closest rivals, having both carded back-to-back 68s for a share of second position.

Two-time major champion Watson is joined by Richie Ramsay and Gregory Bourdy a shot back on seven under in a tie for fourth.

The American birdied the par-five second and was through just five holes when play was suspended for the day. Bourdy posted gains on the second and fourth before his momentum was halted by the weather.
