Valtteri Bottas has signed a new deal with Mercedes to remain at the Brackley-based outfit for a second season.

The Finn was drafted in as a replacement for reigning world champion Nico Rosberg and has performed admirably for the Silver Arrow this year.

Bottas has taken two pole positions and two victories in 2017 and is currently sitting third in the drivers’ championship on 197 points; the new deal is believed to be a one-year contract extension.

“I am honoured and proud to continue to work with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport in 2018 and to remain part of the Mercedes family,” said Bottas. “Together, we continue to grow stronger day by day, and by keeping up our hard work I believe the sky is the limit.

VALTTERI BOTTAS has been sounded out about signing an extension to his current contract at Mercedes , according to team boss Toto Wolff. Valtteri Bottas could sign a new contract with Mercedes this month.

“Overall, the balance of his performances and his upward trajectory made it a no-brainer for us to continue with him into 2018.

“For our team, the bonus factors are the respect and sportsmanship that have grown between our two drivers. The chemistry and dynamic between Valtteri and Lewis work and are what we need to take the fight to our competitors.”

FIA announce tougher sanctions on jump starts in 2018 .
Formula 1’s governing body the FIA has announced new, tougher rules regarding jump starts from next year, allowing a driver to potentially receive a penalty if the detection system isn’t triggered. The views surrounding jump starts came to fruition at this seasons Austrian Grand Prix, after Valtteri Bottas was not penalised, despite appearing to jump the start. This prompted rival drivers to argue that Bottas could not have reacted to the lights so quickly, believing the Finn had anticipated the start. Moreover, another change has also been added to the sporting regulations caused by Sebastian Vettel not positioning his car correctly in his grid slot back in China. The rules from 2018 will read as follows: “Either of the penalties under Articles 38.3c) or d) will be imposed on any driver who is judged to have: “a) Moved before the start signal is given, such judgement being made by an FIA approved and supplied transponder fitted to each car, or; “b) Positioned his car on the starting grid in such a way that the transponder is unable to detect the moment at which the car first moved from its grid position after the start signal is given.
