German youngster REJECTS prospect of ousting Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet. LIVERPOOL appear unlikely to pursue Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn as a replacement for Simon Mignolet after the former revealed he wants to stay in Germany. By Joe Short.

Timo Horn claims he rejected the chance to sign for Liverpool as a teenager. The Cologne keeper has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League and revealed he had the opportunity to join the Reds as a youngster but decided to stay put in Germany.

FC Koln goalkeeper Timo Horn has revealed that he rejected a move to Liverpool when he was a teenager.

The German international, who is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, says that he decided to stay in his homeland due to the track record of how goalkeepers are developed there compared to England.

As reported by the Independent, he said:

“I often had chances and offers to move to England as a youth player, but in my opinion, the best goalkeeping education is here in Germany which is why I’ve always stayed. At the age of 15 or 16, Liverpool were very interested in me but I didn’t go there because I felt the goalkeeping schooling in Germany was much better and I had enough examples. For instance, Ron-Robert Zieler, who came back after a year (at Leicester), and that’s why I stayed in Koln. It definitely wasn’t the wrong decision.”

Liverpool have had issues with their goalkeepers for a number of years. Simon Mignolet, whilst improved, is certainly far from the quality of goalkeeper that other top sides have, whilst German Loris Karius has struggled to adapt to life in the top flight.

Of course, getting Horn at such a young age wouldn’t have guaranteed them a top-class ‘keeper as we don’t know how he would have developed at Liverpool but the Reds would very much like to have him now if they could.

There is a chance he decides to make a switch to the Premier League too as he admitted it is something he has considered.

“In principle the thought of moving to England is appealing. But it’s not something I’m thinking about right now. I can’t rule it out completely.”
