Chelsea to rest Morata and Hazard against Qarabag

Chelsea to rest Morata and Hazard against Qarabag Chelsea are expected to ring the changes for this week’s Champions League clash with Qarabag, the Telegraph report. The two headline names expected to be rested in midweek are striker Alvaro Morata who has netted three goals already for the Blues following his £70m move from Real Madrid, and attacking midfielder Eden Hazard who is yet to start a game this season after suffering an ankle injury in the summer. Qarabag are the clear weak-link in Chelsea’s Champions League group that also features Roma and Atletico Madrid, and with an eye on the weekend visit of Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, Antonio Conte is ready to rest his two star men. After missing out on Fernando Llorente who joined Tottenham on Deadline Day, Chelsea are expected to start Michy Batshuayi up front in place of Morata. One player who did arrive on Deadline Day was Davide Zappacosta and the former Torino standout is set to make his first start after coming off the bench in the win at Leicester last week. Gary Cahill is also poised to start after missing the last three Premier League games through suspension and Andreas Christensen may also be in line to start.

Chelsea started their Champions League campaign with a bang, comprehensively beating Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea rung the changes for Tuesday’s match, bringing in new signing Davide Zappacosta as well as Gary Cahill, Andreas Christensen, Michy Batshuayi and Willian.

Despite the changed side, there certainly wasn’t a changed mentality as Chelsea raced into a 2-0 lead with in 20 minutes. The Blues opened the scoring through Spanish winger Pedro, who curled in a strike from the edge of the area, before Davide Zappacosta, on his first start for the club, ran 50 yards and sent in a whipped cross that flew past Qarabag keeper Ibrahim Sehic.

Chelsea team news: Qarabag (H)

Chelsea team news: Qarabag (H) Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has given an update on the condition of his squad ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League opener against Qarabag FK. The Blues welcome the Azerbaijani outfit to Stamford Bridge as they look to get their European campaign off to a flying start, as Atletico Madrid take on Roma in the other fixture in Group C. Conte, as quoted by the Evening Standard, claimed that Danny Drinkwater is doubtful ahead of the clash. The England midfielder is yet to make his debut for the Blues. “Only one news and yesterday Danny Drinkwater had a muscular problem in his calf. We’re waiting to check the problem. Only this.” The Italian coach also confirmed that Eden Hazard is set to be included in the squad, and could play when Qarabag visit. Hazard made his first appearance of the season for Chelsea at the weekend as they defeated Leicester City 2-1, and although he could be set to feature in their Champions League clash, Conte is not looking to risk his fitness. “Eden Hazard is in the group, is in the squad, and he is working very well to find the best physical condition. He needs a bit of time to continue to improve and to avoid to take stupid risks with him. But now he’s available and he will come on the bench.” Reports have also suggested that Conte may be keen to rest some key players, such as Hazard and Alvaro Morata, with a busy schedule ahead of him. “Eden last season played an amazing season. He’s a top player and we’re looking forward to have him in our team, in our squad.” “I think Eden is an important player for us, but for sure in this period we played without him and we were forced to play without him because of injury. We tried to win every game.

Player Ratings : Chelsea v Qarabag . WHICH Chelsea players were most impressive in the Champions League win over Qarabag ? 1 / 15. Chelsea FC. Chelsea (Team average) - 7.92. “Pedro and Davide Zappacosta both scored excellent first half goals for Chelsea ”.

After halftime, the floodgates well and truly opened as Chelsea added four more goals to their tally. Cesar Azpilicueta nodded in a Cesc Fabregas delivery for 3-0, whilst another new signing, Tiemoue Bakayoko, announced himself to the Stamford Bridge crowd with a goal, as he saw his deflected shot hit the back of the net from close range.

Michy Batshuayi then git his name on the team sheet as he fired home from just outside the area after a series of defensive errors gifted Chelsea the ball. Again Zappacosta was back amongst the action, as his cut back was bundled in by a combination of both Batshuayi and an unfortunate Qarabag defender.

Here are the Chelsea player ratings from the game:

Thibaut Courtois – 6

Held on to a couple of long range efforts from Qarabag, but on the whole, he had nothing much to do.

Conte: Azpilicueta one of world's best centre-backs

Conte: Azpilicueta one of world's best centre-backs The Spain international remains a pivotal part of the Blues side and even scored on their Champions League return, earning praise from his coachCesar Azpilicueta is one of the best central defenders in the world, according to Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte.

Chelsea Qarabag : Antonio Conte opens up on squad trust, talks starting Andreas Christensen. And Conte was quick to explain why he gave the likes of Christensen a start. Chelsea player ratings against Qarabag .

But the Blues were still able to put in a dominant performance to give them a positive goal difference in what could prove to be a difficult group to get out of with Roma and Atletico Madrid also to visit Stamford Bridge. Chelsea player ratings against Qarabag .

Cesar Azpilicueta – 8

The attacking side of his game is becoming more prominent, a rare goal to accompany his two consecutive Premier League assists. He also got the basics right defensively and helped his side maintain their clean sheet.

Andreas Christensen – 7

Extremely composed on the ball under pressure, his confidence in possession emulated that of David Luiz, the man he replaced in the starting line up.

Gary Cahill – 7

A simple job for Cahill as he was made to recycle possession and snuff out any signs of attacking intent from Qarabag. A routine return to the side for the captain.

Davide Zappacosta – 8

The Italian was exceptional going forward. Whilst he may not have meant to score from what seemed a wayward cross, his cut back for Batshuayi’s goal was superb and showed his ability to beat a man and deliver a pin point cross.

Cesc Fabregas – 7

A brilliant cross for Azpilicueta’s goal, using the outside of the boot to curl a cross right onto the head of his fellow countryman. He was able to dictate the tempo due to Chelsea’s dominance and this attacking freedom allowed him to roam forward and spray passes left, right and centre.

Zappacosta: Qarabag win was the greatest night of my career

Zappacosta: Qarabag win was the greatest night of my career Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta has labelled his side’s win over Qarabag as the best night of his career. Speaking to Italian media after the game, as quoted by Goal, the right wing-back was in a beaming mood as he discussed how it felt to net his first ever goal for Chelsea on his debut. “I went through those moments in a genuine trance: the ball in the net, the celebrations of the fans, the embrace from my team-mates. It was total chaos, but a beautiful chaos.” It was a comprehensive victory for the Blues, who thumped Qarabag on the night. Zappacosta was one of several Chelsea players on the score-sheet as Antonio Conte’s men swept the Azerbaijani outfit aside in a 6-0 win. Italian international Zappacosta joined Chelsea on the final day of the summer transfer window for a fee thought to be in the region of £23m. Conte was looking to bolster his wing-back options and identified the former Torino man as the perfect man to battle Victor Moses out on the right. “The best night of my career? Without a doubt. I’ve never experienced a story like this. My Champions League debut, my first match for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and a spectacular goal. All perfect.” Zappacosta will hope that his performance was enough to earn him a place in Conte’s starting line-up ahead of Chelsea’s game against Arsenal on Sunday.

N’Golo Kante – 6

Gave the ball away a couple of times, but honestly, the tempo of the game didn’t suit a player of Kante’s ability as he was expected to contribute further forward due to Chelsea’s dominance and Qarabag’s lack of urgency going forward.

Marcos Alonso – 6

Wasn’t at his marauding best last night and could’ve done with more support on the overlap. He wasn’t really at fault however as most of the play came down the opposite flank, as both Pedro and Willian prefer to play on the right side of attack.

Willian – 7

Produced lovely cut back from a short corner for Pedro’s opening goal, and he was unlucky not to find the back of the net as he hit the crossbar late on.

Michy Batshuayi – 7,

The man always scores, no matter how mediocre his performance up to then may be. Last night was no different, as the Belgian struggled to hold the ball up and make incisive runs that influenced the game. He did, however, manage to grab himself two goals late on, a long range strike and a bundled finish.

Pedro – 7

Scored a trademark curling shot from the edge of the area to open the scoring, and his link up play with Willian was impressive at times.

Conte trusts Christensen to step up with Luiz suspended

Conte trusts Christensen to step up with Luiz suspended Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will turn to Andreas Christensen to fill the void left by David Luiz, who will miss the Blues’ next three games through suspension. The Brazilian was shown a straight red-card by referee Michael Oliver after a high challenge on Arsenal left back Sead Kolasinac and therefore, he is unavailable for the League Cup game against Nottingham Forest, as well as the Premier League clashes with Stoke City and Manchester City. Whilst speaking at his post-match press conference after the 0-0 draw with the Gunners, Conte was asked if he thinks the club has enough depth to cope with the loss of Luiz and he specifically name-checked the Danish international. He said: “Yes. Christensen is a very young player but I think he is a good player and I trust him. Now he has the possibility to play and he has to prepare very well to play.” Whether we see Christensen in all three games remains to be seen as Conte could choose to rest him against Forest so that he is 100% ready to face both Stoke and the high-flying Man City.

Subs

Eden Hazard – 6

He had his moments, but his mazy runs showed no end product. He should hopefully be ready to compete when Arsenal play Chelsea at the Bridge on Sunday.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – 7

Involved from the outset, crunching into tackles and driving forward with the ball, he also managed to grab himself his first goal for the club.

Antonio Rudiger – 7

looked very capable in the tackle and made numerous recoveries to win back possession. He seems to be settling in nicely. If he can manage to sort out his feet when under pressure then there is potential for Rudiger to replace Cahill on a more permanent basis.

Tiemoue Bakayoko involved in car crash .
Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko was involved in a car accident as he drove home from training earlier today. Thankfully, the 23-year-old did not suffer any serious injuries in the collision, although information regarding the incident is still rather thin on the ground. The incident has been described as a minor one and the Frenchman is now at home, meaning he should be fit for this weekend’s clash with Stoke City. The incident took place near Chelsea’s training ground at around 3:30pm this afternoon, shortly after the midfielder has left to head home, As is often the case with social media, there was a lot of widespread panic about the severity of the accident but thankfully, it was only minor and Bakayoko seems to have come away unharmed.
