Marquez happy with new engine, has 'doubts' over new chassis

Marquez happy with new engine, has 'doubts' over new chassis MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez praised the new 2018 prototype engine Honda brought to the Valencia test, but admits he still has ‘doubts’ about the chassis upgrade he also tried. Marquez had three bikes to work with during the two–day test at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit: the bike he raced in Valencia, a 2017 bike with a new chassis, and a 2018 prototype. LCR’s Cal Crutchlow labelled the 2018 prototype as ‘special’ after he tried it on Tuesday, while Marquez – who ended the test fastest of all, setting his best lap on Wednesday on the 2017 bike – heaped praise on the new engine. The Spaniard was pleased with the low and top-end power he could extract from the new motor, and felt the engine worked well with Honda’s electronic set-ups – an issue which plagued the team druing the 2017 pre-season when it rolled out its ‘big-bang‘ engine. “Always when you get a new engine they try to give more power to you, and we gained, especially on the bottom, we gained a little bit more power,” Marquez explained. “Also in the top, we gained there. Still they are looking forward to doing more steps. Like always, they are trying to improve the performance. “I’m happy because it’s the first time that with such a new engine I feel inside the parameters, you know? “Normally every year I was starting here and we were talking one year ago here, saying the electronics are not there, we need to work on the electronics.

Baz: WorldSBK like 'another world'

Baz: WorldSBK like 'another world' Loris Baz says returning to the World Superbike Championship is like stepping into ‘another world’, after completing a successful first test on the Althea BMW at Jerez this week. 24-year-old Baz will make his first appearance in WorldSBK since departing for MotoGP at the end of the 2014 season next year, joining forces with the Althea team – who will be the sole BMW entrant in 2018. Twitter: RT @WorldSBK: @lorisbaz is ready for his second day of testing with @AltheaRacing! #WorldSBK (@lorisbaz) Althea, along with a number of WorldSBK teams, has been in Jerez this week for the first pre-season test of 2018. Baz completed over 160 laps across Monday and Tuesday as he began his adjustment from the AvintiaDucatiGP15MotoGP bike to the S1000RR BMW. “Well, I’m happy, excited. It was special to be back on this bike,” said Baz, whose best lap of 1m40.468s put him just 0.7 seconds adrift of Tuesday pacesetter and former Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes. “Many things to learn again and to get used to again; it’s another world, really different bike. “But in the end I was really fast, I think I finished 0.5s from the laptime I did in qualifying with the GP bike here, so I’m happy. “I think we did a good job, many laps. We improve the weakest point of the bike a little bit, and we are in a good direction.

With a new crew chief and technical team coming into Marc VDS on Luthi‘s side of the garage, the team will give Alex Marquez a run out on the bike in Jerez in order to allow the team to get used to the bike for when Luthi takes to the track for his first laps in Sepang at the end of January.

“We will make one and a half days next week in Jerez, because of Tom’s injury,” Bartholemy told when asked to comment on rumours of a MotoGP test for Marquez.

“We had also the problem that the team is actually new, we have a new crew chiefe, we have a new mapping person, new mechanics.

“And I don’t want to come to Sepang test with a rider that was never on a MotoGP bike and a team that has absolutely no idea about the MotoGP bike, the tyres, the set-ups.”

HRC test rider TakumiTakahashi is filling in for Luthi this week as he takes on a more prominent MotoGP testing role with Honda as current factory tester HiroshiAoyama steps aside to become team boss of the Honda Team Asia squad in Moto2 and Moto3.

Marquez won't settle for '10th or 11th' in Valencia race despite title battle

Marquez won't settle for '10th or 11th' in Valencia race despite title battle Marc Marquez admits he will not settle for low positions if he is able to push hard during this weekend’s MotoGP finale in Valencia despite a fourth premier class title being on the line. The Honda rider comes into the 18th round of the year with a 21-point advantage over Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso – who kept his title hopes alive with a win in Malaysia two weeks ago – and needs just five more points than the Italian to secure his fourth MotoGP crown in five years. Despite the comfortable margin he has in the standings ahead of the title showdown, Marquez is refusing to change his approach to the race and is aiming to give his ‘100 per cent’. “Of course, it’s difficult (the championship pressure) but it’s not my way to ride,” said the Spaniard. “During the weekend I will push like always, I will try to do our 100 per cent. “But, then, after warm-up we will see where we are, where is Dovi, where is the level of the other riders, and then we will decide. “Anyway, I will not go out and (say) ‘10th place is OK, 11th‘. “I will go out and try to find the feeling with the bike and try to give my 100 per cent, and try to enjoy the race. “This is the most important thing.” Title rival Dovizioso – who has never won at Valencia in any class – needs to win on Sunday and hope Marquez finishes outside of the top 11 to secure a maiden MotoGP championship and a first for Ducati in 10 years.

This will be the second time in his career that Marquez has tested Honda MotoGP machinery, as he was awarded a handful of laps on a factory bike in the Valencia test in 2014 after winning the Moto3 title for the Japanese marque.

Marquez will remain in Moto2 next season with Marc VDS, where he will be aiming to add to his tally of three wins and fight to retain the intermediate class crown for the Belgian outfit.

2017 Moto3 world champion Joan Mir will partner the Spaniard, having penned a three-year deal with the team during the Catalunya weekend.

Zarco only rider KTM is 'seriously considering' for 2019 .
KTM CEO Stefan Pierer has told German media that Johann Zarco is the ‘only MotoGP rider I am seriously considering’ to form part of the Austrian marque’s line–up for the 2019 season. 2017 marked KTM‘s first season as a factory entrant in the premier class, with the team finishing fifth in the constructors’ standings ahead of Aprilia by five points on 69, while both Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith ended the year 17th and 21st respectively, having amassed 84 points between them. With KTM making huge progress in its debut season, and expected to do so again in 2018, speculation over its 2019 future has already begun, as most riders are out of contract at the end of next year. Already rumours of KTM poaching newly-crownedfour-time world champion Marc Marquez from Honda have begun to circulate. Pierer is well aware of the speculation surrounding his team and has labelled them ‘interesting’, but insists only Zarco – who finished 2017 as top rookie in sixth in the standings and with three podiums for the Tech3 team – is on his radar. “When I look at the championship table, there’s no-one I can think of except Zarco (to join KTM), to be honest,” Pierer told “He won the Moto2 World Championship for two years with AkiAjo, and won the Red Bull Rookies Cup on a KTM. He knows KTM. “If you ask me, I would say this is the only MotoGP rider that I’m seriously considering for 2019.
