Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup

Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup Joe Gomez will not play again this season, and he’s likely to miss the World Cup too, after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle. The 20-year-old played through the pain during Liverpool’s draws with West Brom and Stoke City and it appears that he wasn’t quite aware of the seveirty of the injury. However, the defender needed surgery to repair the issue and as such, he won’t be part of Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League final in Kiev at the end of May. Gomez was also likely to be included in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad after impressing in his recent appearances, but it looks unlikely that he’ll be fit enough to be part of the 23-man contingent that goes to Russia to represent England. Whilst it was unlikey that Gomez would have started the Champions League final if fit, he would have been named as a substitute, but that will no longer be the case. The news that Gomez will miss the World Cup could open the door for either Trent Alexander-Arnold or Nathaniel Clyne to be called up in his place, although neither offer the defensive versatility that Gomez would have provided to Southgate.

Hodgson backs Loftus-Cheek for World Cup

Hodgson backs Loftus-Cheek for World Cup Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson believes Ruben Loftus-Cheek deserves a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup next month in Russia. The 22-year old on loan from Chelsea has been one of Palace’s standout performers this season, and was even rewarded with a debut England cap against Germany in November – where he further impressed. Palace will be hoping they can convince Chelsea to let the young midfielder leave this summer, with Hodgson confirming he would like to sign Loftus-Cheek permanently. However, the player’s priority will be making the Three Lions’ squad and impressing if he gets the chance, and Hodgson believes he has what it takes to do so. When asked if he would include Loftus-Cheek if he was still manager, Hodgson said; “Yes. I don’t wish to suggest anybody to (England boss) Gareth Southgate, because it’s his decision alone, and I don’t want to be seen to be pushing any player towards him.” “(But) if it was a much more specific question; if it was me selecting the squad, would I find a place for him in the squad, I would.

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who spent the season on loan at Crystal Palace, is set to gain a place in the squad, and Adam Lallana of Liverpool has assured Southgate of his fitness following a hamstring injury and should be named in the final party.
