Southampton completed a deal to sign goalkeeper Angus Gunn from Manchester City on Tuesday.

Gunn has signed a five-year deal with Southampton for a fee thought to be in the region of £10m.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan to Norwich, his hometown team, in the Championship, where he made 51 appearances in all competitions.

His form earned him a call-up to train with the England squad ahead of the World Cup, but why is he a good signing for Southampton?

It was confirmed today that the England Under-21 international has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at St Mary’s, joining in a deal believed to be worth £10m initially. Gunn discussed the appeal of Southampton as a club and was also quick to point out just what convinced him to arrive on the south coast. “The opportunity was there for me to stay at Manchester City but I saw the potential of this club and the squad.” The 22-year-old hailed the influence of Dave Watson, formerly an England goalkeeping coach, and revealed that he had consulted the Saints staff member ahead of the move from City. “The manager and Dave Watson were a big part of the reason why I have chosen to join and speaking to them both was a big factor in my decision.” “I think the club has got a big future and I’m looking forward to getting started now. I’ve spoken to Dave Watson and he said it would be a great environment to come in to work.
