Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he does have a bit of a selection headache regarding his defenders ahead of Sunday’s clash against West Ham.

The Reds get their season underway against the Hammers at Anfield on Sunday afternoon but they have a decision to make about who will partner Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the defence.

Speaking at his press conference, the manager confirmed that Dejan Lovren will not feature due to his late return after he helped Croatia reach the World Cup final, whilst Ragnar Klavan has also been ruled out with injury.

Xherdan Shaqiri rejected Man United to join Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri rejected Man United to join Liverpool Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed that he ignored interest from a number of clubs, including Manchester United, in order to join the Reds in the summer. As reported by Swiss outlet Blick, the 26-year-old was aware of interest from United, Southampton, West Ham and a few other clubs, but he was so keen to join Liverpool that he simply ignored any other approaches. After Stoke City’s relegation to the Championship, Shaqiri was available for around £13m due to a clause in his contract and he was keen for a Premier League side to meet that amount as he wanted to continue playing in the top division. As reported in Blick, a few teams made approaches to the Swiss international but he ignored them all once he found out that Jurgen Klopp was interested in bringing him to Anfield. Having made an immediate impression by scoring an overhead kick against United in pre-season, Shaqiri has already begun making an impression on the Liverpool fanbase and he’ll hope to continue to impress them all season.

Ahead of Liverpool ’s trip to West Ham on Saturday evening, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic finds himself with a number of injuries at the back. Hopefully, these West Ham injuries work in Liverpool ’s favour on Saturday, as they look to win a third game in succession.

His return eases defensive concerns ahead of the Premier League kick-off. Liverpool face West Ham at Anfield this Sunday but have several injury doubts. Lovren's return eases Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's defensive worries .

Joe Gomez looks the most likely to be ready to play alongside Van Dijk, although he too isn’t 100% fit and he missed the recent game with Torino.

If Matip and Gomez are unavailable, Nathaniel Phillips, who has performed well in pre-season, will likely partner Van Dijk.

Allardyce urges Pellegrini to change Hammers tactics .
Former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has hit out at Manuel Pellegrini after seeing the Hammers fall to a 4-0 defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Pellegrini was announced as the new manager in May before overseeing as many as 10 new signings ahead of the new Premier League season, with five of these signings being given their debut at Anfield. Before the ball had even been kicked Pellegrini had noted that he wanted the squad to play his way rather than defending from the start. While the tactics were a bold move, it wasn’t long before Mohamed Salah knocked one past new keeper Lukasz Fabianski, followed by a double from Sadio Mane and the final nail in the coffin from Daniel Sturridge in the 88th minute. Speaking on TalkSPORT, ‘Big Sam’ was quick to note that Pellegrini needs to turn things around quickly if he is to see out his three-year contract with the Irons. “West Ham going and attacking like they did is never going to work when you’ve got those players. It’s a little similar to watching Chelsea versus Huddersfield – Huddersfield having a go and Chelsea picking them off. These players are that good, you leave them that space, they expose you.” Allardyce, who managed West Ham from 2011-2015, identified one area that the team need to improve on quickly. “Certainly West Ham left too much space between the midfield and the back four and Liverpool kept sliding in between the lines and punished them rightfully so.
