Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers cut a frustrated figure when he was quizzed about John McGinn’s decision to join Aston Villa.

According to the Daily Record, Rodgers hinted that the chance to play in England could behind his decision to turn down a move to Celtic, despite being a boyhood fan of the club.

“I spoke to John at length on Wednesday just to wish him all the very best. It’s a great move for him. There’s disappointment for us – especially when you are a lifelong Celtic supporter.”

“But he is joining another illustrious club with a great history, a good boss and has the chance to play in England. He has developed a lot in the last couple of years. He is a prime age at 23 and I wish him all the very best.”

John McGinn (born 18 October 1994) is a Scottish footballer, who plays as a midfielder for EFL Championship club Aston Villa and the Scotland national football team.

McGinn completed a move to Aston Villa yesterday after being linked with a move away from Hibernian throughout the summer.

Celtic were heavily tipped as the front-runners to sign the player, but a move looked increasingly unlikely as Hibernian stood firm in their valuation of the midfielder.

The player was given permission to travel to Villa and discuss a move to the Championship hopefuls, but it was also suggested that the Hoops matched Steve Bruce’s offer for the player, leaving the player with the decision to make.

Rodgers admits that Celtic are weaker than they were last season .
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has said that his side are not as strong as they were last season and that they are desperately trying to add to their squad this summer, Vital Celtic reports. Celtic have made just one signing this summer after completing the permanent deal of Odsonne Edouard after a successful loan spell at the club last season. The club have faced a fair bit of criticism so far this summer due to their lack of activity in the transfer window, especially due to the fact that first-team players Stuart Armstrong and Erik Sviatchenko have been allowed to depart. Rodgers has now admitted that the squad is weaker than it was last year but that the club do not have the funds available to go over the top on transfer fees. As quoted by The Daily Record, Rodgers said: “We’ve got a core that really connect to how we work but we have to bring in quality.” “Now that’s then what goes over to the club, and then the club will look to then do their best, which I believe they are, their very best, to get the level of quality that we need in and that’s going to help us improve because that’s what’s important.” “I love working with the players that we have. Continuity in football sometimes gets forgotten about because people just want to recycle players.” “But when you get to a state like our club is in, which is very healthy, very strong, lots of great value within the squad, with lots of growth left in them, that’s great.” “Our job is to improve that. You also need to strengthen. We aren’t as strong a squad as what we were last year.” “We have lost players. I think everyone can see that, but the club know that as well. We all push to try to get in the best quality that we can to make us better.” “The players that we have need help. We are down on what we were.
