"Two of the gardai there were visibly shaken. One was very upset.

"Our attention was first drawn when a number of unmarked cars went speeding by.

"Then the armed gardai arrived and started asking everyone if there was a firearm in the house.

"About 10 more gardai cars arrived in the space of five minutes along with the fire brigade, paramedics and the National Ambulance Service.

"The child was put in the ambulance and then got a gardai escort off to hospital."

One neighbour, a dad-of-one who lives around the corner from the quiet cul de sac, said: "This is tragic, so sad to hear.

“Myself and my wife were upstairs and we noticed a lot of Garda activity so we knew it was probably a bit more serious than a break-in.
